Study 12

The gift of healing is a very necessary weapon in our warfare as we enforce the good news of the kingdom of Heaven on this earth.

What is the true biblical meaning of this gift? In I Corinthians 12:9 the word healings is plural meaning more than one type.

The Greek word is iama meaning: a healing
Usage: healing, curing, remedy. i

This Greek word is used as a noun in the context of the gift of healing. (I Cor 12:28,30)

This is derived from the word iáomai meaning: healing, particularly as supernatural and bringing attention to the Lord Himself as the Great Physician (cf. Is 53:4,5)ii.

This greek is used as a verb in the context of healing eg. I heal a physical or spiritual disease by been empowered by the Holy Spirit.

So, let’s Look at Jesus as our example of healing others as we war in the spirit. In Luke 4;16-17 we read that after Jesus had been tested in the wilderness, he went into the various synagogues and started teaching. In V 19 He read out of Isaiah 61 that says, the Spirit of the Lord was upon him to preach the gospel to the poor, release the captives, release recovery of sight to the blind, and set free those who are oppressed.  In V 31 He came to Capernaum and taught there in the synagogue while teaching there, he cast out a demon that was manifesting in a person in  38 -41  we read….. He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her. 39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them.  40 While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them. 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

This is just a small snapshot of the healing that Jesus did, John 21:25 states that even the world itself could not the books that would be written about the many things that Jesus did.

In Mark 16:15-18 Jesus commands us to go into all the world and preach the gospel, he promises that signs and wonders will accompany those who believe, this includes healings. These signs and wonders validate that the good news message is true. This healing gift is for us to give to others and receive for ourselves as we need it.
